2013 NMS Participants for Jr. SEMSBA

NMS Participants for Jr. SEMSBA

Junior SEMSBA (South Eastern Massachusetts School Bandmaster's Association) is an opportunity for advanced music students in grades 7-9 to audition for participation in a Music Festival.  Participation in the Festival includes a day and a half of rehearsal culminating in a concert of orchestra, concert band, treble and mixed chorus.  Our NMS SEMSBA participants auditioned in February and were selected based on their superior scores in accuracy, tone quality, musicality, and sight reading ability.  The Junior Festival will be held this year at the recently renovated Rockland High School, with two concerts Saturday, May 4th:  Choruses at 1PM; Band and Orchestra at 2:30PM. Tickets and more information are available online at www.semsbama.org.

The students, who qualified, are (clockwise from the front of the triangle in picture below):  Olivia Benson in Violin, John Boersdamm in Baritone Horn, Alex Cassady in Trombone, Noah Yeskewicz in Percussion, Liam Bingham-Maas in Trumpet, and Brian Gallagher in Chorus.

Congratulations, Tiger Musicians.

3rd Quarter Report Cards Going Home Friday, April 26

Third Term Report Cards Issued Today, April 26

This afternoon an Alert Now message will go out to make sure that everyone knows that Report Cards for Third Quarter will be issued today, Friday, April 26.  They will go home with your child with a small sheet saying you received and saw the Report Card, which will need to be signed and returned to your child’s homeroom teacher on Monday, April 29.

I have said this before, but I will continue to say that:  Communication is a powerful tool in closing the gap between home and school and ensuring success for all of our students.  The marks that you find on the report card should never be a surprise to either you or your child.  If you feel that discussion regarding your child’s progress or lack of it is needed, please make an appointment to schedule a time that would offer both you and the teacher enough time to adequately discuss your child's present situation.  We are three-quarters of the way through the year, so we now have a pretty good idea about where your child may be as a student in each of her/his classes; there is only one quarter left to make sure the grades are where they need to be for your child.  Please pay attention to your child's studying practices, homework preparation, and what modifications everyone (including the student, teacher, and parent) could do to improve the situation.  We are here to help with any of this.

The fourth quarter is usually one of the more difficult times of year for all students:  the weather gets nicer, more students are participating in outside of school activities, and just a general feeling of being done sets in.  We need to make sure all students finish as strong as they started.  Please stay in contact with your child's teachers and counselor if you need any support with this.

A report card is only one communication component but it is not our only one, please continue to check this blog for updates.  If there are elements you find that we are not communicating to you, please let us know.  Again, we are here to help on this incredible educational journey for your child and you.

Thank you,
M. R. Geoghegan

Costa Rica in Middleborough?

Travel from Middleborough to Costa Rica through the Nichols Middle School

You come in the front door of the Nichols Middle School, and I bet you didn't know that if you go up the stairs, take a left, and head into Room B308, that you will enter the wonderful world of Costa Rica.

Ms. MaryAnne Fisher, 6th Grade English Language Arts Teacher, has transformed her classroom into the tropical educational atmosphere of Costa Rica.

As Ms. Fisher wrote to her students, sit back and enjoy the culture and creativity of Costa Rica through the eyes of our incredible Nichols Middle School students.

The students made presentations of what they learned about the culture, climate, population, education, geography, topography, and more.

Learning should be fun, and in Ms. Fisher's class, students don't need a passport to another land to enjoy all the learning that is in store for them.

57th Annual John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School Science Fair

A Celebration of Scientific Proportions

On the evening of Wednesday, April 11, the 57th Annual NMS 7th Grade Science Fair was held in the John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School gym and auditorium.

The night's festivities were hosted by NMS Science Department Chair, Mr. Scott Redpath, and by our 7th Grade Science teachers, Mr. Steve Eddy and Ms. Cindy Kuhn.

The students displayed their scientific acumen through multiple means as they had a tri-fold board, report, lab notebook, and made a presentation.  Everyone in attendance was dazzled by the incredible amount of time and effort students put in to making this night an amazing success.

Ms. Melanie Gates, STEM Coordinator Grades 6 through 12, said it best when she mentioned how the students showed the spirit and energy scientists display in proving their own hypotheses.

An awesome night of academic excellence.

Congratulations to all of our young scientists, and most especially to our winners.

Principal Mr. Geoghegan awarded our 2013 NMS Science Fair Championship to Courtney Chane, who wowed the crowd with her project, while Runner-up, Evan Gwozdz, and Middleboro Trading Post Plant Award Winner, John Surrette, did not let anyone down.  The judges had the most difficult time they had ever had in deciding on a champion; congratulations, Courtney.

Video Interview of Mr. McLaughlin and Mr. Geoghegan

Tiger TV Interviews Principals

Tiger TV was able to get the Nichols Middle School Assistant Principal and Principal to break from their busy schedule to sit down and chat with the Nichols Middle School Tiger TV production staff.

Please check out the video to see and hear some interesting questions thrown at the Nichols Middle School Administration.  You may be surprised to hear some of their answers to some hard-hitting journalistic queries.

A big thank you to Mr. John Healey and the Tiger TV Production Staff.

Enjoy.

Rally Against Cancer -- Dress for Sox-cess Fundraiser: A SUCCESS

NMS Shows Its True, Generous Spirit

On Monday, April 8, the Nichols Middle School hosted our Rally Against Cancer Dress for Sox-cess Fundraiser, and it truly was a SUCCESS.

In our own version of the World Series, we definitely proved to be Champions.  Through the generosity of the students, faculty, staff, and the whole Nichols Middle School community, we were able to raise over $1,500 for NMS Team Dylan.

All the funds will go to help fight this horrible disease, which affects so many of our loved ones, but especially our own Team NMS-Dylan Captain, Dylan Berio.

Thank you all for all your support; it was an awesome, awesome accomplishment!

Rally Against Cancer -- Dress for Sox-cess Fundraiser for Monday, April 8

Help NMS-Team Dylan Defeat Cancer

Good afternoon Nichols Middle School community,

On Monday, April 8, Opening Day for the Red Sox at Fenway Park, the John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School community will be participating in a very special fundraiser:  The Jimmy Fund Rally Against Cancer Dress for Sox-cess Fundraiser.

The Berio family has joined forces with the students of Nichols Middle School to help strike out this horrible disease.

Students can come to school wearing their favorite Boston Red Sox gear, and all we are asking for is at least a dollar donation to wear your hat during school.

Students may make more of a donation, if they choose, for all the proceeds will go to The Jimmy Fund in support of Team Dylan Berio.

Dylan Berio is a five year old, who is battling cancer.  Dylan is the brother of Hayden Berio, a 7th grader here at NMS.

One can sign-up by making a gift in one of three ways to help strike out cancer:
  1. Bring a cash contribution to school on Monday, April 8.
  2. Bring a check made out to "The Jimmy Fund" to school on Monday, April 8.
  3. Visit the website and make an online donation at:  http://www.rallyagainstcancer.org/2013/nmsteamdylan

All proceeds raised will go to the Dana-Farber Pediatric Brain Tumor Research fund and to the Dana-Farber Brain Tumor Pediatric Patient Fund.

Please help us Rally Against Cancer and strike out this horrible disease.

Go NMS Team Dylan!
