NMS Debate Team -- Open to All Students

It's Time to Debate

The Nichols Middle School Debate Team is looking for you.

This Club/Team is open to any interested 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Students.

Do you like to voice your thoughts and opinions about current topics in our world? Do you want to learn how to best get those ideas across?

If so, Debate Team may be for you. The NMS Debate Team will be starting soon.

Debate teaches students critical thinking, public speaking, and supporting an argument. It can help students build curiosity and confidence. When one thinks of a 21st Century skill debate is a prominent one.

If you are interested in joining the debate team, please stop by and see Ms. Conant in B302.

Our debate team is limited to 12 students.

We will have an informational meeting and tryouts after school on Monday, October 3rd, and Wednesday, October 5th.

Watch this great video on Dylan:

Dylan’s Story
  • Dylan is now 8-½ years old at the MKG.
  • He was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 3-1/2 on June 10, 2011.
  • He has been through two brain surgeries and five protocols of chemotherapy.
  • Dylan has lost 50% of his vision due to one of the tumors behind his eye that is inoperable.
  • Surgery is currently not an option for Dylan.

Go for Gold
  • We have joined The GOLD WORLD Project in their mission to do everything we can to help increase Childhood Cancer Awareness. It would mean the world to so many families to see NMS go for Gold.
  • Wear as much gold clothing as you can on Friday, September 30, to raise awareness of childhood cancer.
  • All donations will go toward fighting childhood cancer and will be given in Dylan’s honor.

NMS School Council, 1st Meeting, Wed September 28

2016-2017 John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School Council

Are you interested in getting involved with your child’s education in another way besides PTA or fundraising?

Would you like to be more involved in the academic aspects and decision making of your child's education here at Nichols?
If you are, then seriously consider whether you would be interested in joining the Nichols Middle School Council (also called a School Improvement Council).  By law, every school in the country has to have a School Council.

The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils.  School councils are to assist principals in:
  1. Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards;
  2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school;
  3. Reviewing the annual school building budget; and
  4. Formulating a school improvement plan.

Over the past four years, our School Improvement Plan and School Council have been instrumental in helping us to change our bell schedule, adding back a second assistant principal, obtaining a consistent math program throughout the building, affecting change in all areas of our curricula, securing more technology to where we will be 1-to-1 very soon, to just name a few.
We meet once a month on the 4th Wednesday of each month, except where specified below – starting Wednesday, September 28, for about an hour, beginning at 3:00 PM and ending around 4 PM, in the NMS Media Center to discuss such items as our School Improvement Plan, parent involvement, how we are working with MCAS/PARCC data, what we are doing to improve teaching and learning, different curricular ideas, courses, etc.  In all, the group is not like the “PTA”; it is more a group of people who are looking into school improvement and how we can get the improvement we are looking for.
The group is made up of parents, teachers, and at least one community member.  If you are interested or would just like to come and check it out, please come to the first meeting, Wednesday, September 28, at 3 PM, in the Media Center at NMS or email me at mgeoghegan@middleboro.k12.ma.us.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  Thank you.
