Change of the Date for Term 3 Report Cards

Third Term Report Cards Will Be Distributed on Friday, April 26

Because of all the snow days, we felt it in the best interest of the students to move the closing date of third term from April 4, to April 11.  With the shift in these days, we have a better redistribution of the number of days per term.

If we had not shifted these days, fourth term would have had five extra days with third term being much shorter with the days off we have had during these past couple of months.

According to the original calendar, we would have handed out report cards before the April Break, but with the days added back to third term, we will distribute Third Quarter Report Cards on Friday, April 26.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Main Office.

Thank you.

MCAS Starts Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 19

MCAS, Parent Teacher Conferences, and Cyber-Netiquette Presentation

This afternoon I made an Alert-Now message reminding all parents about MCAS as well as two other important notices.

The first reason for the Alert-Now was to remind all parents that MCAS testing begins tomorrow, Tuesday, March 19.  All the students of Nichols Middle School (grades 6, 7, and 8) will start the English Language Arts portion of this year's MCAS tests. All students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 will be working on ELA Reading and Comprehension on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Grade 7 will be working on the Long Composition on Monday, March 25, for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), has postponed the Long Composition until next Monday, for the threat of inclement weather in the other parts of the state.

Please try to make sure your child gets a good night sleep and something to eat for breakfast during these days.  We will be providing a snack and a drink to all students, but they are also encouraged to bring in a healthy snack and a water bottle.

Please make sure students are here on-time all week, wish them luck and re-emphasize the tests' importance.

A second reason why I called was to remind you that Parent-Teacher Conferences are on Thursday, March 21, from 6 to 8:30 PM, and next Tuesday, March 26, in the afternoon 4 PM to 6:30 PM. These conferences are only five minutes in duration. That may not be enough time for a complete discussion regarding your child’s progress or lack of it. If you feel that more time is needed, use your appointment to reschedule a time that would offer both you and the teacher enough time to adequately discuss your child's present situation.

Thirdly, on Thursday, March 21, at 6:30 PM, in the Middleborough High School Auditorium, Plymouth County’s District Attorney, Kristen Stone will present “Cyber-Netiquette” for parents.  Topics covered include:  cyber-netiquette; legal responsibilities of a child content sharing; sharing etiquette; and overall cyber safety.  We hope you will join us for a powerful and informative presentation.

Thank you,

M R Geoghegan

Mr. Dick Hoyt of Team Hoyt Visits NMS

Very, Very Special Presentation for the Students of the Nichols Middle School

On Thursday, March 14, the NMS PTSA was able to bring Mr. Dick Hoyt to make a special presentation to the students of the Nichols Middle School.

Mr. Hoyt is, in his words, "not the better half of Team Hoyt," but for us at NMS, he was beyond sensational.

Team Hoyt, for those who may not know, is the inspirational story of a father, Dick Hoyt, and his son, Rick, who compete together in marathons and triathlons all over the world.  Dick pushes his son in a wheelchair, for Rick has not had the ability to walk since birth.  They have competed together in over 1,100 athletic events including the Boston Marathon, triathlons, and Ironman competitions.

Team Hoyt strives to help those who are physically disabled become active members of the community.  For us, at NMS, he carried forth Team Hoyt's message of "Yes You Can!" to our whole student population.   As  Mr. Hoyt said over and over to the students of Nichols Middle, "You can do anything you set your mind to doing."  It is a message that Dick and Rick Hoyt embody and live, and hopefully for our students they too will begin to believe and live for themselves.

For more information about Team Hoyt and Dick and Rick's incredible, inspirational story, please go to TeamHoyt.com

NMS 6th Grade Student Work

Creative Student Work Example

The following is a student work from sixth grade student, Eric Faith, from Ms. Andrea Borges's class.  The assignment was to write a poem using a poem the students studied in class from a different perspective.  Eric chose to write his version from the perspective of the dog.  The original poem is "The Poison Tree" from William Blake, which is below after Eric's original.

Great job, Eric, you've got some talent, my friend.  And great creative, thinking assignment, Ms. Borges.

From:  The Poison Tree: By William Blake
Adapted by Eric Faith
PERSPECTIVE OF THE SPEAKER’S DOG

It was a great life, fed twice a day.
“Such a good boy you are.” he would say.
But one day, he and his friend had a fight.
But they made up, and were alright.

One day, he came home, upset and mad.
When I tried to help him, he called me bad.
I looked at him, and he screamed “Go away!”
I ran out the door, and returned the next day.

“Ugh, you’re back.” He said with hate.
He never filled my bowl, that day I never ate.
This went on for five more days.
Finally, I had enough, and ran away.

I lived in the street, a lonely dog.
I drank only water from streams, lakes, and bogs.
I was sure I would starve and die.
But then someone came and looked me in the eye.

I recognized him, he was my old master’s foe.
He was why my master abandoned me, this I know.
This was the man who made my master mad.
This man was very, very bad.

“Come here, boy,” he said, and he waved.
Suddenly, I realized, he thought I was a stray.
He didn’t know his foe had a pet.
He thought my master was alone and upset.

The man took me home and gave me food,
He pet me and hugged me, for weeks, life was real good.
But one day, after work, the man never came home.
Hungry, I jumped up and looked out the window.

He wasn’t there, and for six days never came home.
I sat there, hungry, cold and alone.
Finally, I left, and ran back to my old house.
I crept in, as silent as a mouse.

I saw my old master, laughing an evil laugh.
He was cutting up pictures of his foe, I saw that.
He was the reason his foe never came home.
He was the reason I was all alone.

When he saw me, his laughter stopped, and he began sadly coughing.
His face wasn’t angry, now it had softened.
He gave me food, and acted like a nice friend.
Now I know, I will never understand humans.

The Poison Tree: By William Blake
I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears
Night and morning with my tears,
And I sunned it with smiles
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright,
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine -

And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning, glad, I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

3rd Quarter Progress Reports Issued 3/11

Good morning,
This afternoon you will be receiving an AlertNow message to remind parents that Progress Reports for Quarter 3 were issued yesterday afternoon, Monday, March 11, because of the snow day last Friday. Your child came home with the Progress Report as well as a receipt that needs to be signed and returned to school on Wednesday, March 13.
As I have said before, the marks that you find on this progress report should never be a surprise to either you or the student. Please make sure you check out the grades as well as the comments for Conduct and Effort. If you feel that discussion regarding your child’s progress or lack of it in any of these categories is needed, please make an appointment to schedule a time that would offer both you and the teacher enough time to adequately discuss your child's present situation. Please make note that Parent-Teacher Conferences for the spring are just a week away on March 21, from 6 to 8:30 PM, and March 26, from 4 to 6:30 PM. We need to make sure there is open communication between school and home.  Remember also this is a report on progress; there are still some weeks left for those 3rd Quarter grades and comments to change or improve, so please keep up with checking your child's agenda on a nightly basis.
Also a reminder, if you haven’t done so yet, please go to the right, here on the website and enter your email so you can receive updates on any and all important information about what’s happening or will happen at NMS.
Thank you,
M. R. Geoghegan

Message from the NMS PTSA

Important Message from the PTSA about Book Fair During Parent/Teacher Conferences

Dear Families:

Our Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon. We hope you can visit the Fair during Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday 3/21 6-8:30 and Tuesday 3/26 4-6:30.

All students will have an opportunity to visit the book fair during SSR periods the week of 3/18-3/22.  ELA teachers will inform students of their assigned day.  Cash, check and debit/credit cards are accepted.

This year, we have a new opportunity to bring more books to our students. We call it One for Books.

Donate just $1 and sign the Book Slip below with your name or child’s name so we can display it at our Book Fair.  Clusters of students will compete to see who can raise the most money.

All of the money you give goes directly to purchase books for our school. We will use it to help enhance classroom libraries.

Scholastic Book Fairs will match the One for Books dollars you raise with a donation of up to a million books to three non-profit programs devoted to improving reading skills among children: Kids in Distressed Situations, National Center for Family Literacy, and Toys for Tots.

Please send your dollar and signed paper Book Slip back to school with your child. Also look for the One for Books displays at local businesses. Thank them for their support ... and on behalf of the students of John T. Nichols Jr. Middle School, THANK YOU!

Book Fair Chairperson,
Rose Borges

NMS "Harlem Shake"

NMS "Harlem Shake" Video from Spring Fever Event

Mr. Adam Pelletier, our Video Media Specialist, has compiled a short video of the John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School student body and our very own Mr. Tim McLaughlin in his best Angry Orange outfit doing their best impression of the Harlem Shake.

This video was recorded during our Spring Fever Event from Friday, March 1.  I would like to thank all the students who came and participated.  I would also like to thank all the faculty and staff who helped out during the event.  I would most like to send my appreciation to the parents of the PTSA who without their assistance the event would not have occurred.

But without further ado, please check out NMS's version of the "Harlem Shake."  Too much fun, if you ask me.  Enjoy.

After-School Math Program

After-School Math Program at NMS

The John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School is proud to offer an after school math program to support students leading up to their math MCAS exam. This program is funded through a Title 1 grant. Our after school math program is free for all of our students. The program will begin on Monday, March 4th and conclude on Wednesday, May 6th. It will run on each Monday and Wednesday after school from 2:35-3:35pm, with the exception of vacation weeks or school holidays. Students will be able to take the late bus home.

At the start of the program students will be given a grade specific assessment to provide instructors with data to guide instruction for students within the program. Historical MCAS data will also be considered.

A typical afternoon session will consist of about 15 minutes of whole group instruction with a targeted mini-lesson. This will be followed with opportunities to reinforce content with small group and or individualized instruction.

It is our expectation that students will commit to attend each after school session. This will enable staff to best support each student and meet their individual needs. We ask that the student and their family sign a letter of commitment to make every attempt to attend the 17 after school sessions.

If you have any questions, please call 508-946-2020, or email the school and ask for either Ms. Melanie Gates, STEM Director, melaniegates@middleboro.k12.ma.us, or Ms. Amy Anderson, Program Facilitator, amyanderson@middleboro.k12.ma.us.

Also, check on our NMS website to see more information about this program, with the brochure, parent letter, and registration: http://www.middleboro.k12.ma.us/NICHOLS/2012-13/After%20School%20Math%20Program/AfterSchoolMathProgram.htm
