2016 NMS Girls Soccer Team Finish as Massasoit League Champions!

Congratulations NMS Girls Soccer 2016 Champions!

The following is written by Coach Kelly McLaughlin, who did an incredible job writing this as well as coaching our NMS Girls Soccer team to the Massasoit League Championship. Congrats, Ladies! I love what she says and how she talks about the wonderful nature the girls played with this season as Champions. I thank her, the team, the parents, Mr. Perry our AD, and everyone who worked so hard this year to make the 2106 NMS Girls Soccer Team Massasoit League Champions! Thank you.

Here is Coach McLaughlin:

The Nichols Middle School Girls Soccer team became the 2016 Massasoit League Champions following their victory against Seekonk on October 25^th!  The girls had an amazing season of 9 wins and only 1 loss.  I continue to be impressed with these ladies and the way they are able to function as a single unit on and off of the field.  

Although I am extremely proud of their victories and their Champion status, I am even prouder of the way they conduct themselves.  Throughout the season with all of their successes, the girls demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and grace as a team, something that even many professionals struggle with. The leadership on the team from eighth grade captains Emily Benson, Mandi Bukunt, Eden Eugenio, and Aileen Peddie created a positive atmosphere where girls felt comfortable to share their ideas and feelings without fear of rejection or embarrassment.  I am proud to call this team champions because they possess all of the qualities of a great soccer team: great passing, communication, shooting, and field vision, while also being great people off of the field.  It has truly been an incredible two months with an incredible group of girls and I am so thankful for the opportunity to have been able to coach them!

NMS StuCo Upcoming Events

NMS Student Council Upcoming Events

The NMS Student Council will be holding several events over the next few weeks.  It is our hope that the faculty and staff will talk up the events with students and join in on the fun.

October 31st Dress-Up - Students are encouraged to dress up for a future career in which they have interest.  Ex.  nursing scrubs, science lab coat, or a suit.  Teachers are encouraged to dress up as someone famous from their field of expertise.  Ex. A Shakespearean character,  soccer player, Mozart...  Sorry no masks.

Movember-November - We will hold our third annual facial hair competition at NMS called Movember.  Growing starts on November 1st and students, staff, and faculty will be able to donate money towards the facial hair of their choice during the last two weeks of November.  The winning "soup strainer" will donate all money raised in the competition to a charity of his choice.    

Thanksgiving Food Drive - November 14th-18th we will collect nonperishable food for the St. Vincent de Paul Society food pantry.  Donated food will go to needy families in our town.

I love what he says and what he expressed to this phenomenal group of boys. I thank him, the team, the parents, Mr. Perry our AD, and everyone who worked so hard this year to make the soccer team a success. Thank you.

The 2016 NMS Boys soccer team played their last game Tuesday, October 25, and finalized an amazing learning experience for the entire team. Unlike a lot of middle schools in the area that are composed entirely of 8th grade student athletes, Middleboro’s team was comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders whom had never played together before. Even with the odds against them, the boys came together quickly as a team and learned the importance of working as a unit compared to trying to win as individuals. Their success this year was not judged by wins and losses. Instead, these young men worked on setting goals and pulling together to achieve them. Their main focus: Getting better every day.

None of this would have been possible without the outstanding leadership of all of the 8th graders, including Captains Mike Abban and Jacob Glenn, who set the example for the entire team on how hard they needed to work and how much they needed come together to be a winning team.

These boys exemplified what it means to be student athletes at NMS. They never gave up when things didn’t go their way. They never hung their head when things got tough. They persevered and overcame all obstacles in front of them. They created lifelong friendships, built trust, worked together, and exercised sportsmanship on every level every day.

It was a pleasure and honor to be a part of this team and I look forward to many more successful seasons at NMS.
