Summer Reading Books and Assignments
2016-2017 School Year
All Nichols Middle School students are required to read during the summer break, and complete the assignments that accompany each book.  The book lists and the assignments are listed below.

The main purpose of "summer reading" is to have our students continue good, positive reading habits when school is not in session; not have students' reading levels regress; and also to try to engender reading as something beyond a "chore."

Please read the handouts carefully, and enjoy your summer reading selections!

ROAR Award Winners Posted for June 2016

June 2016 ROAR Awards Handed Out

A couple of years ago, NMS began a new program, which recognizes student achievement each month.  the ROAR award is given by each cluster and Unified Arts to acknowledge students who have been Respectful, On-time,  (displaying a positive) Attitude, and Responsible.  The goal is to recognize students who not only take care of basic expectations in class but are good citizens and role models in our community.

This year we have also connected the ROAR program with our TIGERS culture-building protocol.  We are specifically looking for students who are Trustworthy, have Integrity, are Generous, are Empathetic, are Responsible, and show Strength.

Award winners receive a certificate, a coupon for a free book at the book fair, bumper stickers for their parents’ cars, and their individual picture displayed in the Main Office for the month.

The June award winners received their certificates from Mr. Geoghegan, Ms. Rae, and Mr. Thomas in a brief ceremony on the last day of school.
Not all students were able to make the picture.  :-(
The ROAR Award winners for June2016 for each team were:
Grade 6 Adventurers:  Tess Brunelle
Grade 6 Challengers:  Cassie Heleen
Grade 7 Explorers:  Nick Clayton
Grade 7 Beacons:  Julia Masse
Grade 8 Apollos:  Jared Zapata
Grade 8 Comets:  Mia Thompson
Unified Arts:  Cameron Morgan (6th Grade)

Congratulations to all!  Thank you for all your efforts; you are ROARing to a sensational, strong finish to the school year!

Congratulations to all our ROAR winners this school year; you are model TIGERS for our school and we appreciate your efforts.

On Wednesday, June 15, and Monday, June 20, we had our annual NMS 8th Grade Awards Nights for both the Comets and Apollos teams.

Students were awarded for academic achievement as well as contributions to the Nichols community.

All students then got to walk across the stage and receive certificates of accomplishment.

At the end of the evening a short video was presented put together by Mr. Adam Pelletier, MHS Video Production students, and some 8th grade students.

Here is the video:

Class of 2020 Having a Blast at the Dance

8th Grade Put Some Final Touches on Middle School Experience

One of our students' rite of passage was completed on Friday, June 17th evening as we had our 8th Grade Dance.

The students did as they usually do, where for the first 25 to 30 minutes there are not many dancers and the kids just kind of milling about checking out each other's outfits.  To then almost every single student dancing the rest of the night away, with our having to stop them at 9 PM.

It was a wonderful evening with so much fun.

We thank all the faculty and staff who came to help with chaperoning and the parents who donated snacks, drinks, and paper products or their time in setting up or cleaning up or serving food.

A very special thanks to the NMS PTA for supplying the pizza for the evening as well as our DJ with the help of our NMS StuCo.

Again, it was a tremendous evening for all.

This was a fabulous evening.

Thank you.

2016 8th Grade Field Day's Fun in the Sun

8th Graders Battle for Field Day Supremacy

Thursday, June 16, our 8th Grade Students battled as Homerooms to see who would take home the top prize.

Students were taken through different obstacles and activities led by Mr. Redpath.

There was the human pyramid, musical chairs, freeze dance, tug-o-war, Simon says, bat races, and more.

The battle was a fiery one at times.

In the end, after a fun-packed day, Mr. Jesman's Homeroom took home the trophy.

It was a Comet sweep with Ms. Evans and Mr. Petruski taking second and third.

Awesome job, 8th Grade students, 8th Grade teachers and staff, PTA parent helpers, volunteers, and all the donations of water from NMS parents.

NMS PTA also provided the DJ for the day.

As well as check out the incredible 8th Grade T-shirts supplied by the NMS PTA, which all the kids are sporting.

Great job, all.  It was so much fun seeing you all have so much fun.

Here are some pics from the day:
