NMS Hat Day for Harvey Relief Fri 9/29

Hats for Harvey Day on Friday, September 29

On Friday, September 29, our NMS Student Council will be holding a fundraiser for the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

This will be our first NMS StuCo event of many for the school year.

All NMS StuCo is asking is if anyone would like to contribute to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund for a student to bring in a $1, which will allow them to wear a hat during the whole school day.

Donating students will receive a stamp and be allowed to wear their hats all day.

If students choose, they may bring in more than $1, but it is not necessary.

NMS StuCo students made this video, which will be shown during Morning Announcements on Wednesday and Thursday.

#GoNMS!

Come to school on Friday, September 29, with a buck for Harvey Relief and Wear a Hat All Day!

Any questions, please contact Mr. Don Rothemich and Ms. Bonnie Hudson, our NMS StuCo Advisors.

A Letter from NMS PE/Fitness Department

Fitness Testing Letter for NMS Parents/Guardians

September 26, 2017

Dear NMS Parents/Guardians:

Over the past two school years we have been using Fitnessgram software to help us to analyze the results of each child to help you and your family understand what each test result means.  This software also allowed us to email home reports to each family with an email on file, or mail a paper copy home for those who requested one.  Although we will be continuing this process, we will be using a different software, IHT Spirit Assessment.  Mrs. Enos and Ms. Rich began using this software last year when they were participating in a statewide data collection initiative.  The reports will share the same data with you, it just may be in a different format than you’ve seen previously.

Information in the report is only shared with a child’s family, and it is not posted or shared anywhere else.  The information found in the reports include the child’s aerobic capacity, upper body strength and endurance, abdominal strength and endurance, and flexibility.  Along with each score is information about what the score indicates and what your child can do to either improve or maintain his or her  fitness level.

As our department continues to move forward in terms of using technology and being able to share more information about your child’s performance you will begin to see other changes as well.  The IHT Spirit software will be able to use it to share more information with you about your child’s performance in various units.  These assessments will also be emailed for you to view. Our department is also hoping to continue expanding with this software to attain the Adidas Zone heart rate monitors which are connected to the software.  This will allow you, your child, and ourselves to look at each child’s heart rates during class to help us best suit the needs of each child.  As our department continuously works on improving our curriculum, we will keep you informed as changes are made.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at any time.

Reminder: 2017-2018 NMS School Council, 1st Meeting, Wed September 27 3PM

2017-2018 John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School Council

Are you interested in getting involved with your child’s education in another way besides PTA or fundraising?

Would you like to be more involved in some of the academic aspects and decision making of your child's education here at Nichols?
If you are, then seriously consider whether you would be interested in joining the Nichols Middle School Council (also called a School Improvement Council).  By law, every school in the country has to have a School Council.

The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils.  School councils are to assist principals in:

  1. Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards;
  2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school;
  3. Reviewing the annual school building budget; and
  4. Formulating a school improvement plan.

Over the past five years, our School Improvement Plan and School Council have been instrumental in helping us to change our bell schedule, adding back a second assistant principal, obtaining a consistent math program throughout the building, affecting change in all areas of our curricula, securing more technology to being a 1-to-1 Chromebook school, getting more student recognition to be a priority for us as a school, to name just a few.
We meet once a month on the 4th Wednesday of each month, except where specified below – starting Wednesday, September 27, for about an hour, beginning at 3:00 PM and ending around 4 PM, in the NMS Media Center to discuss such items as our School Improvement Plan, parent involvement, how we are working with MCAS data, what we are doing to improve teaching and learning, different curricular ideas, courses, etc.  In all, the group is not so much similar to the “PTA” in improving the school through fundraising; it is more a group of community members who are looking into school improvement and how we can get the improvement we are looking for.
The group is made up of parents, teachers, and at least one community member.  If you are interested or would just like to come and check it out, please come to the first meeting, Wednesday, September 27, at 3 PM, in the Media Center at NMS or email me at mgeoghegan@middleboro.k12.ma.us.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  Thank you.
