Below is all the information parents and students need for Summer Reading 2017 for all of our incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade students.  

All of the links will take you directly to specific grade's Summer Reading Assignment.

This year, all three grades have decided to do Summer Reading a little bit different than we have done in the past.  We are hoping that you and your child appreciate the change.  Please give us feedback on how you feel about our NMS Summer Reading.

NMS Summer Reading Assignments

2017-2018 School Year

All Nichols Middle School students are required to read during the summer break, and complete the assignments that accompany each grade.  The assignments are listed below.

The main purpose of "summer reading" is to have our students continue good, positive reading habits when school is not in session; not have students' reading levels regress; and also to try to engender reading as something beyond a "chore."

Please read the handouts carefully, and enjoy your summer reading selections!

NMS 2016-2017 Final Report Cards -- Have a Great Summer!

Third Trimester and Final Grades Report Cards Handed Out

This afternoon all Nichols' households will be receiving a Blackboard Connect message reminding everyone that Final Report Cards were handed out to the students and will come home today.  Please make sure you check grades as well as comments section of the Report Card.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Main Office.  

I also wanted to take the time to thank everyone in the Nichols' community for all your support as we traversed another year here at NMS.  

It has been a wonderful year and it has been because of the students, teachers, staff, parents, and overall community.  

Thank you so much for all that you have done to support the work we have done with your child.  

Thank you, again, for an incredible year, good luck to our 8th graders next year, and have a wonderful, safe, and relaxing summer vacation. 

We will see you on Tuesday, September 5, for the start of another fantastic year.

2017 NMS 8th Grade Awards Nights Video

A Special Group: Three Years in the Making

On Monday, June 19, and Tuesday, June 20, we had our annual NMS 8th Grade Awards Nights for both the Comets and Apollos teams.

Students were awarded for academic achievement as well as contributions to the Nichols community.

All students then got to walk across the stage and receive a rolled scroll (their certificates of accomplishment will be given to them in Homerooms on the last day).

At the end of the evening a short video was presented, which was made by Mr. Adam Pelletier, MHS Video Production teacher.

Eighth grade is a sensational transition year and we wish all of our eighth grade students success as they enter the high school portion of their educational journey.

ROAR Award Winners for June 2017 Presented

June 2017 ROAR Awards Handed Out

A few years ago, NMS began a new program, which recognizes students for achievement and positive school contributions each month.  The ROAR award is given by each grade's cluster and Unified Arts to acknowledge students who have been Respectful, On-time,  (displaying a positive) Attitude, and Responsible.  The goal is to recognize students who not only take care of basic expectations in class but are good citizens and role models in our community.  Teachers and faculty get together and decide on who is most deserving for each month of the school year.

We also connect the ROAR program with our TIGERS culture-building protocol.  We are specifically looking for students who are Trustworthy, have Integrity, are Generous, are Empathetic, are Responsible, and show Strength. 

Award winners receive a certificate, a coupon for a free book at the book fair, bumper stickers for their parents’ cars, and their individual picture displayed in the Main Office for the month.

The June award winners received their certificates from Mr. Geoghegan, Ms. Rae, and Mr. Thomas in a brief ceremony after Homeroom.  We decided to double the number of winners to be two per team.

The ROAR Award winners for June 2017 for each team were:

Unified Arts: Dylan Furtado (8th Grade) and Emily Benson (8th Grade)

Congratulations to all!  Thank you for all your efforts; we appreciate how you are ROARed to an AMAZING school year as TIGERS!

Summer Reading Program News from Ms. Walgreen

New State-Wide Summer Reading Initiative

The Summer Reading Challenge is a free program open to all students entering grades K-12. Designed in partnership between Mass Literacy and the technology startup Readocity, the program helps students develop a lifelong love of reading. Using the free Readocity app, students set reading goals, track their progress and discover award-winning book recommendations.

Ms. Walgreen has emailed every student the link if he/she would like to join, and she has also created a NMSLibrary classroom in Google Classroom.

Be named the official Summer Smart Reading Champion in the Boston Herald!

Both the school and the individual student that logs the most reading hours will be named Summer Smart Reading Champions and be featured in the Boston Herald. All students who meet their goals will be listed in the Boston Herald as Summer Reading Stars.

Dancing Like It's 2021 (Class of 2021 that is)

Such a Fun Group

One of our students' rite of passage was completed on Friday, June 16th evening as we had our 8th Grade Dance.

The students did as they usually do, where for the first 25 to 30 minutes there are not many dancers and the kids just kind of milling about checking out each other's outfits.  To then almost every single student dancing the rest of the night away, with our having to stop them at 9 PM.

It was a wonderful evening with so much fun.

We thank all the faculty and staff who came to help with chaperoning and the parents who donated snacks, drinks, and paper products or their time in setting up or cleaning up or serving food.

A very special thanks to the NMS PTA for supplying the pizza for the evening as well as our DJ with the help of our NMS StuCo.

Fun in the Sun -- 2017 8th Grade Whale Watch Field Trip

8th Grade Field Trip on Tuesday, June 13

On Tuesday, June 13, many of our 8th Grade students went on a whale watch with Captain John's Whale Watch out of Plymouth Harbor.

Students and chaperones all had a great time.

It was a very warm day, but being out on the water was not a bad place to be.  

Fun, fun experience for all.

A special thank you to all the eighth grade teachers and staff who helped to make this trip possible, whether they stayed behind with the students who chose not to go or those that chaperoned or just helped with the organization of the day.

Thank you to the NMS PTA for paying for the bus transportation.

Thank you to our parent volunteers who also came on the trip.

Thank you to Mrs. Amy Anderson, who pretty much organized and ran this special event for our 8th Grade students.
