Nichols Middle School
2015 Science Fair
We want YOU, Future Scientists!
Dear Students and
Parents,
The 59th annual Middleboro
Science Fair will be held on Wednesday April 15 at the John T.
Nichols Middle School. Participation is now voluntary and is open to all students’
grades 6-8. For years the NMS Science Fair has been a
mandatory part of the 7th grade curriculum. For a variety of reasons, we have decided to
open the fair up to all grades, now as a voluntary extracurricular
activity. NMS science teachers will be
available to guide and assist any student who is interested in participating.
There are three
categories of projects, one for each grade: ILLUSTRATIVE, INVENTION/DESIGN and EXPERIMENTAL.
Grade 6: Illustrative/Research projects
answer a scientific question or process through illustration. For
example: the life cycle of a butterfly; how do bees make honey; our solar
system; how the human circulatory system works.
Grade 7: Inventions
(Engineering Design/Technology Build) are gadgets built to solve some sort of problem.
Grade 8: Controlled Experimental projects prove a theory through the use of
the scientific method (question, hypothesis, experiment to collect data, conclusion).
You should register your
child NO LATER THAN Friday, April 3rd. It is important that
you register soon. We need to know who will be participating so we can
order tables and medals. We also need a count of students so we can begin to
know how many judges we will need the day of the fair.
A web site has been set
up with additional information: http://nicholsmiddleschool.oursciencefair.com/SchoolHome.aspx
Please see your science
teacher to get the proposal/outline which is necessary to complete in order to
indicate your desire to participate in this year’s science fair. Return it as soon as possible to your science
teacher. Contact your child’s science teacher with any questions.
Please note: no
live animals, peanut products, hazardous materials or flames are
allowed at the fair. We hope you encourage your children to pursue
science in this fun and exciting hands-on way! Awards will be given for
each grade category and every child who participates will receive recognition
for their hard work. We look forward to seeing you there!
Thank you,
John T. Nichols Middle
