The Monthly Roar
This was sent to me from Ms. Ciulla, our Health teacher. Her students put this together in their Health classes.
It is very fun to see the interdisciplinary connections here.
Enjoy.

Many
kids are not wearing layers when they get off the bus and are also complaining
that they are cold in school. However, colds and the flu are caused by viruses.
If there aren’t any around you won’t catch a cold. Due to the cold
temperatures, people tend to stay indoors more often which causes people to be
around one another and spread germs easier. It's not necessarily the cold itself that gets you sick, but
it is other things like dryness and lack of sunlight. Not washing your hands or
“catching that cough” is not attractive. Many kids walk to and from
school and when they get to school their top priority is getting warm, which
causes less focus on academics. It is better to bundle up and put on layers than
freeze in the cold. You can take the layers off after you’re warm and put them
in your locker. We learned this week that unexpected fire drills are not fun
when all you have on is a tank top and shorts! Keeping warm should be a top
priority, so try adding fuzzy leggings to that new dress or wear a sweater so
your shoulders are not bare. When going outside to play in the snow make sure
to go inside to warm up when you feel too cold. Have some hot chocolate! Enjoy
the holidays without getting sick!
Why Play Sports?

Playing
sports and staying active can help you stay healthy. Being active is a big part
of your health because you are pushing your body to stay fit. Playing sports
like soccer, football, lacrosse, hockey, or anything that keeps you going can
help you lose weight and gain muscle. Staying active can help prevent health conditions such as heart disease,
high cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension. It can also improve muscle strength,
bone health, and a better night’s sleep. Playing sports can help you get your
mind off things and relieve stress! Sports can just help relax you. Physical
exercise is good for your mind, body and spirit. Furthermore, team sports are
good for learning accountability, dedication, and leadership, among many other
traits. Putting it all together by playing a sport is a winning combination.
Sports help memorization so it can help you in school to get good grades. It
also helps with determination and goal setting, and communicating with others
to be successful!

Art Club
Art
club is an afterschool program that anyone can join whenever they want. You can
try clay, pottery, pastels, and more. Art club advances growth for creativity
and inspiration. Art club can also help you meet new friends from each grade.
There are many different styles to draw or paint and you can learn most of them
in art club. Being open to this club may increase your artistic skills, which
may help you if you want to be an artist later in life. Also, art club can help
release your stress and anxiety. During art club, you can be yourself and not
worry about how good you are. Everyone has their own style and no one will
judge.
Foreign
Language Club
Foreign Language is a club that you need to sign up for after school. You can take
Spanish, French or Russian with three different teachers. If you take a
language it can be very beneficial to teenagers. It helps if you ever need help
and you run into someone who doesn’t speak English. Our world is a big place
and there are many different languages and cultures. It can help you meet new
people or enjoy new types of food, religion, etc. It can also help you get a
head start on high school because you have to choose a second language. Also it
allows you to experiment with what language you like or want to take.
Being
bilingual can help your brain grow and you can have an advantage over single
language speaking people. Learning a second language can help us learn and be
prepared for life. J
GSA

Alliance) Club is a student/teacher lead club at NMS. This
club helps bring together LGBTQ+ and straight students to support each other
and provide a safe place to socialize about sexual orientation and gender
identity. This club simply helps to provide support, build a sense of
community, and take action to create positive change in the culture of our
school. This club is offered every other D-day in the health room (C205) during
lunches.
What’s Up in Health?
By Damian
M
We have moved into Trimester 2 and new UA classes go into Health, Art, and STEM. We have moved from 7th grade to 8th grade Health where we will
learn about sex education and the human body and the effects of puberty. We talk
about the mental and physical changes that go along with it. We will be talking
about healthy and unhealthy relationships, stress-management, goal-setting for
high school, as well as risky decisions when peer pressured around drugs,
alcohol, or in other social situations. Most of all, we will talk about ways to
live a healthy and happy lifestyle.
Stay Energized!
By Eva F
Many things can make you healthier like exercising and eating the
right foods. If you exercise the right amount of time each day and maintain a
balanced diet, it will increase things like your stamina and increase energy
levels. Exercise and healthy eating habits will let you live a healthier life socially,
mentally, and physically. Lastly, make sure you are getting enough sleep each
night and get as much rest as possible when you feel run down.
After School
Sports
By Sam W
Winter has just started but it is never too late to be thinking
about spring sports like baseball and softball. Tryouts
for spring sports begin in late March and run through early June. There
is also a $175 user fee due when selected for a team. Spring sports require
full effort and being able to come to all the practices and games. Baseball and
softball are athletic sports having you run, bat, pitch, catch, and running
outfield.
Tryouts
By Kayla
F, Narelyn T & Madison W
Each season, tryouts for each sport are after school and open to
anyone who is interested. However, only certain participants will be accepted
on the team. From sports you can learn teamwork and achieve goals. Sports also
offer many health benefits. Playing sports gets you into a routine and helps
make healthy decisions. Sports can cut down on your stress and help boost
self-esteem. Even if you don’t make a team, that doesn't mean you can’t try out
again for the town or other teams. If you’re truly devoted to be on a sports
team, all it takes is hard work and commitment.
