NMS 6th Grade Students Connecting With the Greater World

Google Hangout Experience for Mr. Leonard's 6th Grade DIAL

During Mr. Leonard's sixth grade DIAL block on Friday, November 17, his students connected with some sixth and seventh graders from Beachwood Middle School outside Cleveland, Ohio.

It was a great experience for our students.

Mr. Leonard through email touched base with the BMS Social Studies teachers, Mr. Holman and Mr. Lenk, who first made contact with Mr. Geoghegan through Twitter.  They wanted their students to connect with other students from all 50 states.

So NMS got the chance to represent Massachusetts.

It was a great conversation for our students to have.  Each class first tried to figure out from Yes/No questions where the other class was from.

A couple of Mr. Leonard's students adeptly noticed as the kids were entering the screen from BMS that one student in Mr. Holman's class had a Cleveland Browns sweatshirt on, and so they could narrow it down from there.

It took a few more questions from the BMS students to figure out exactly what state we were from.

Once that was established, the students Google Mapped and Googled each other's schools to see their websites and ask some other questions of each other.

It was a fun, interactive experience for all students involved.

I thank Mr. Leonard, Mr. Holman, Mr. Lenk, all the students involved, and Mr. Mike Mills from the MPS Tech Department for helping to make sure our connectivity worked.

I love when we can make the world a smaller place as we utilize the technology that is in our students' hands.

As one of Mr. Leonard's students said to me when he saw me later at lunch.  "That was so cool.  I was talking to someone from Ohio just a little while ago."

Here are some more pictures from the experience:
