NMS Music Stars Shine

NMS Students Go To SEMSBA
In February, a group of our NMS Band, Chorus and Orchestra students auditioned for the Junior SEMSBA Music Festival. Based upon their audition, 7 of our NMS musicians were chosen to participate in the Festival.

The 2016, Junior SEMSBA Festival was held on Friday, May 6th, and Saturday, May 7th, at Whitman-Hanson High School.

Our students were in rehearsals from 9 am until 4 pm on Friday, and from 9 am until 1 pm on Saturday with other music students from the participating SEMSBA School Districts.

The rehearsals culminated in two fantastic concerts on Saturday afternoon.

The Southeastern Massachusetts School Bandmasters Association, or SEMSBA, was established in 1950 by Donald F. Leach of Whitman, Myron B. Thomas of Hingham, George W. Ventre of Weymouth, and Luther Churchill of East Bridgewater. The purpose of SEMSBA has been to raise the standard of school instrumental and choral music, as well as to promote greater community interest in school music programs. It was through the leadership of these educators that standards of high musical quality have given the pupils of participating towns the opportunity to come together to experience the enjoyment of performing some of the world’s best musical literature.

The first Senior SEMSBA concert (Festival Band Only) was held on February 28, 1953. The first SEMSBA Festival Chorus performed in 1957, and the first SEMSBA Festival Orchestra performed in 1980. Presently, 33 school districts participate in SEMSBA.
